Work with tasks
Organize tasks
Search task numbers, titles, and descriptions, combine filters, and save or share a project task view.
The project task list shows task number, title, Plan membership, state, labels, dependencies, Mass, assignee, and recent activity so you can decide what needs attention.
Use Search tasks above the list to find task numbers, words, or partial words in task titles and descriptions. Search ignores case, trims surrounding whitespace, and treats repeated spaces or line breaks as one space. Every space-separated term must appear somewhere in the task number, title, or readable description; terms can match across those fields. For example, #246 timeout can match task #246 with a description containing “timeouts.” Repeating a term does not require another occurrence, and punctuation is matched literally.
Description search includes readable Markdown text, link labels, and code. Formatting characters and hidden link destinations are excluded; a URL displayed as an autolink is searchable. Enter a number with or without its visible # prefix. Search does not look in labels, assignees, Plan names, comments, or work-run content.
Search combines with all selected filters before sorting and pagination. The state summary counts still describe the full project task set. Clear search removes only the search and returns to page one, preserving your other view choices.
Open Filters above the task list to see the labeled state, Plan, dependency status, and label controls. The filters start collapsed, and your expanded or collapsed choice is remembered locally for each project. Choices update the list immediately. The Filters button shows the number of active filter categories, and Clear all remains available while filters are collapsed. Disclosure is not part of a shared view.
The searchable Plan filter lets you combine Unplanned, Incomplete plans, Complete plans, and individual active Plans. These Plan choices use match-any behavior with each other, then combine with label and other filter choices. Choose All Plans to reset only Plan filtering. The state filter follows the lifecycle in Understand the task workflow.
The list opens with the newest task numbers first. Select an available column header to sort, choose Tasks per page for 10, 25, or 50 tasks, and use the pagination controls to move through the results. Changing search, a filter, sort, or page size returns to the first page. Clear all resets search, every filter, task-number descending sorting, the first page, and 10 tasks per page.
Copy the page address to share the current search, filters, sort, page, and page size with someone who has access to the project. Search is stored in the q address parameter. Refreshing the page restores that view. Use your browser's Back and Forward controls to revisit earlier choices, including returning from a task detail page. Opening Tasks from navigation without view parameters restores your last saved view for that project.
An explicit view in the address takes precedence over your saved browser preference, including an explicit default view. Changes you make are remembered locally for that project and are also written to the address. Invalid choices are reset safely, unavailable labels and active Plans are removed after their lists load successfully, and a page beyond the results moves to the last available page. A failed filter-list load retains the address so refreshing can retry without losing those choices. Shared links do not grant project access.
Unplanned means the task has no Plan membership. Complete plans contain only Done tasks, while Incomplete plans contain at least one task that is not Done. A task in an archived Plan remains visible under All Plans and is not included in Unplanned or the active-Plan completion choices; open its compact Plan metadata or task detail to follow the archived Plan link.
Choose Has incomplete dependencies to find tasks that are waiting on direct prerequisites. A dependency is complete only when its task is Done. To find work ready to claim and queue, filter task state to Backlog and dependency status to No incomplete dependencies. The task detail also shows both its dependencies and active tasks that it blocks.
- Use an assignee to make responsibility visible; an unassigned task has no current owner.
- Use a Plan for one durable named grouping. A task can belong to only one Plan at a time.
- Use the task state to show where work is in the lifecycle.
- Use Mass to communicate the expected human review difficulty. It does not represent implementation duration or priority.
- Use labels for categories, areas, or initiatives that people need to filter. Project and inherited organization labels can both appear on a task.
- Use dependencies for actual ordering constraints, rather than for a loose relationship between tasks.
Open a task to edit this metadata, read its Markdown, add a general comment, or move it into the queue.
